Custom machine design

Custom machine design

A fitting solution and a technical specification

Due to oft complex behaviour of handled material and advanced technology involved, preliminary design plays an important part in special machine design. In this phase, we work in close collaboration with the client’s production team. This results in a fitting solution and a technical specification. We ensure an efficient design by combining relevant knowledge of engineering, thermals, measuring and control technology, electrical engineering and ergonomics.

“The design process does not end at the drawing table.”

Concept design

We ensure an efficient design by combining relevant knowledge of mechanical design, thermal behaviour, measuring and control key choices, electrical engineering and ergonomics. Data logging and remote control possibilities are always present. During the concept phase, we often use Creo Elements/Direct for 3D modelling. The flexibility of this software allows for much drawing productivity in this phase than parametric modellers. Our simulation environment are ANSYS Mechanical Enterprise CFD Maxwell 3D for sizing and Simulink for control.

Detailed design

Detailed design

After agreeing on the concept, Huygens Engineers will work out the detailed design for the mechanical and electrical/control disciplines. Once the detailed 3D packages are ready and the needed detailed control-related choices is ready, we also create all 2D machine drawings. These drawings define various specifications for each component, such as the tolerance structure and the location of im-portant baseline points. We also consider the possibilities of the considered production and assembly facility. Assembly aspects are also included in the drawings. Throughout the entire design process, the drawings remain fully accessible to the client via an internal portal. In this phase a parametric modelling environment (SolidWorks, NX, Inventor) is equally productive and we work in any environment. We use Simulink for control validation.

Realisation and delivery may be part of the scope, in which case Huygens will do the control-work and validation work in-house and subcontract assembly activities. Even if realization and delivery is not within our scope, the design process does not end at the drawing table. The focus of every project remains practical. Our clients can come to us for every design and implementation step. The project capacity varies by phase, depending on the amount of work. This prevents unnecessary costs. During the detailing, we draw in Creo Elements/Direct, SOLIDWORKS and Siemens NX.
