R&D Engineer Electrical Machine Design and Controls
A professional who enjoys designing, validating and commissioning the EE side of testing rigs and working prototypes resulting from multidisciplinary R&D projects.
Huygens Engineers is a technical R&D contractor for OEMs active in deep tech, in the energy transition, in marine tech and with various industrial customers. We develop solutions, components, functions and systems in projects where de-risking on one or more aspects is typically required. We provide crucial technical development work to both high profile startups and established market leaders. The Electrical design engineer test- and measurement automation typically works on testing rigs and prototypes resulting from previously described, and will have substantial interaction with professionals from other disciplines.
Our projects include truly boundary pushing projects such as devices within new generation nuclear reactors, sea water lubricated machines, advanced flow control but also specialized production-machine projects. Our work involves de-risking, and various aspects of behaviour must be validated through testing.
Location Hengelo or The Hague
The nature of the job:
To (learn to) identify requirements, conceptualize, design and subsequently realize and validate solutions for specific R&D customer projects. Example: in extreme environments, constraints appear with respect to maintaining essential functions such as bearings, insulation, sensing. From the teams understand the uncertainties and values to quantify. Based on these requirements create a setup that can (automatically) answer the relevant questions. The activities include: Understanding the relevant measurements, from discussion with the rest of the team. Identify measurement techniques, Selection of sensors and acquisition devices, create the electrical design of the measurement and automation system. Preferably create tooling for post processing the data to acquire the answers from the measurements as required.A highly experienced team is available at Huygens Engineers, and ample support and methods are available to develop experience in a reassuring learning process. Communication with the customer and proper filing is part of the work: report writing, presentation making and giving presentations to customers.
Requirements:
- BSC/MSC Electrical Engineering or Robotics with background that includes automation, sensor selection, and ideally power conversion & cabinet design
- Capability to translate project requirements into measurement setups
- Capability/interest in (power) system design. The systems to design, specify, implement and commission include electrical machines, mechatronic systems, sensing systems, grid connections, batteries, electrolysers, converters, PLCs. SCADA systems and hierarchies in a broad power range from 3 W to 3 MW. In-house development of the converters is typically avoided.
- Proven programming experience/skills are required in at least one of the following: MatLab/Simulink, Python, PLC (ST), Labview
- A hands-on and autonomous mentality being both at ease with programming, assessing hardware and troubleshooting
- Working in projects within a team
Support and development:
Electrical R&D engineer validation & industrial control has the whole organisation to support him/her, including other specialists from his own field, specialists from other fields, the project owner at Huygens and in some cases a project manager. Aside from technical knowledge, the following qualities will be developed:
- Structured approach yet creative capability in problem definition and problem hierarchies, solution space identification, solution concepting and development
- Structured mapping and evaluation of technical risk in architecture and implementation options
- Inclination and capability to interview with humility yet incisiveness customers, suppliers and colleagues for relevant input
- Capability to sum up discussions and present progress and reasoning during the design process
- Capability to collaborate in teams with other specialists
The first dimension of personal development is technical: the Electrical R&D engineer validation & industrial control will get exposed to applications, systems, teams and customers where he/she will build further experience and skill in many aspects of electrical design, validation and certification. Then, the second dimension of personal development is organization of technical development: project (re)design capability by having proper and efficient steps in the process. This includes aspects of project quantification and quotation. The third dimension of personal development is relationship development, where skills are developed to understand and relate to the business situation that drives the customer to do their developments. Efficient customer communication leads to great technical output and wonderful new questions and projects.
Summing up, the Electrical Engineer machine design and controls will expand their technical base, their ability to influence project design, and their ability to influence organizations.
Projects:
Projects can last from a few weeks to two years, but typically last 6 months. A person typically works on 2 projects simultaneously. Efficiency/customer focus is expected in that customers typically expects to understand why/how the work invoiced has added value. Work is done in Huygens-Engineers offices.
