Master thesis on fatigue behavior of a new type of metallic composite has started

Master thesis for preliminary research on fatigue behavior of a new type of composite for affordable high strength large scale structures has started.

Research from 1938 by Volkersen, Goland and Reissner (1973) and others, about stress distribution in adhesively bonded joints, inspired to develop new methods of fatigue predictions in metallic bonded structures.

Bonded structures offer perspective for lightweight solutions when fatigue is involved compared to welded or riveted/bolted structures because stress concentrations and material derating offer less challenge. Using metal composites and avoiding fiber reinforced plastics also provide more sustainable solutions.

Huygens Engineers is sponsoring a project where fatigue behavior of adhesively bonded metallic large structures is being quantified and validated.
